Coffee always tastes best when freshly ground so if you want to get the very best possible flavour then grind whole coffee beans just before brewing.
Electric coffee grinders come in two different types – blade grinders and burr grinders. Both do a job but burr grinders are far better because they provide consistency of grind as they crush the coffee beans between two discs or “burrs” ensuring that the coffee grinds all come out at your desired level of fineness.
Blade grinders chop up the beans and can leave you with big bits of bean that didn’t get caught in the blades properly which isn’t the end of the world but the coffee will not extract properly during brewing and could impair the flavour.
Electric blade grinders are cheaper then electric burr grinders and both can be noisy and generally will have to live on the kitchen worksurface due to their size.
So what do you do if you don’t want a blade grinder that may not chop up the beans properly but you don’t want to spend a lot of money on a burr grinder that will cause even more clutter in the kitchen?
Fortunately, a 3rd option exists in the form of a manual burr grinder. For the coffee connoisseur, you can still shell out a decent amount for high-quality component parts with a product like the Porlex manual coffee grinder that actual costs a similar amount to some electric burr grinders but if all you want is something that will do what it says on the tin then this neat little kitchen accessory may be just what you are looking for.
Overall Score 9.6/10
Design 9/10
At first glance, you could easily mistake it for a pepper mill but it’s certainly bigger than the average pepper grinder measuring in at 21cm tall and 9cm wide but is miles smaller than any of the electric alternatives and probably best of all will fit nicely in any cupboard keeping the work surface free for other things.
For the price, it’s a very well constructed appliance finished in a matt black plastic and a glass transparent base that allows you to see exactly how much ground coffee you have at any one time.
It has a solid and durable feel to it and it would be unsurprising if it lasted well beyond the excellent 2-year warranty that comes with it as standard.
Functionality 9/10
The container at the top where the beans go for grinding holds about 30g of coffee beans and the base holds about 50g of ground coffee. You need about 20g of coffee for a double espresso so you can grind up to 4 regular coffees or 2 strong ones at any one time.
Easily adjust how fine the beans will be by turning one simple screw to move the 2 discs that do the grinding closer together or further apart. This grinder will work perfectly whether you are using a catetiere, filter coffee machine or pump espresso machine.
Because the beans get crushed in between 2 discs and not chopped up with a blade you will get consistent grind size every time.
It’s much quieter than an electric grinder and you get the pleasure of creating the ground coffee yourself which somehow makes the coffee drinking experience even better when you know you did it yourself
Incredibly for this price they give you an extra glass pot for you to keep the beans in ready for pouring into the grinder.
Ease of use 10/10
No need for a manual with this little gem, just unscrew the top, add the beans and turn the handle until you have the desired amount of coffee in the container.
Dead easy.
Value For Money 10/10
This is going to cost you about the price of a McDonald’s for two and it will taste a lot better than a McDonald’s when the coffee beans are converted into a gorgeous cup of coffee.
For something that is going to give you regular pleasure and probably last north of 5 years its an absolute bargain.
