  • THE PERFECT GRIND – This hand coffee grinder features an adjustable grind selector that gives you complete control over the coarseness of your whole bean coffee; from a fine grind for espresso to a coarse grind for your French Press

If you don’t mind putting in a little work then you can achieve the same with this grinder what you would get from an electric burr grinder at but at a much higher price.

One of the big benefits of the Henry Charles manual coffee grinder is quality AND price.

The legwork that you will have to put in is all in the wrists so if you have issues there then you will probably want to give this a miss but if you don’t mind giving those wrists a mini work out then this grinder will save you a decent amount of money.

This grinder has been made for everyday use so it’s worth spending this kind of money if it is your intention to grind on a regular basis.

If you are only grinding weekly or less frequently than that or maybe you only want to manually grind your beans when on holiday and you don’t want to take your main coffee grinder with you because it’s just too much hassle then you might be able to get away with something a little cheaper like this budget manual coffee grinder that will do the job but it depends how fussy you are with the quality of the grind.

You get what you pay for when it comes to this type of product and the cheaper you go the lower the quality of the components resulting in a shorter life and less consistency of grind.

To put it into perspective a high-quality electric burr grinder could easily set you back between £100-£200 and an equivalent manual grinder would be something like the Porlex manual coffee grinder that will give you the same result as a super expensive electric version but at a much lower price but of course, you have to do all of the grinding yourself.

Perhaps you are getting sick of the low-quality coffee that you are forced to drink at work and you want to enjoy the same quality of coffee that you do at home then this will match up perfectly with something like an Aeropress for super easy high-quality coffee every day at work – goodbye instant or even worse if you are drinking from a plastic cup with coffee delivered from a machine then this will transform your day!

Another benefit of a hand held grinder is significantly less noise, so if you are up early and you don’t want to disturb anyone else this kind of grinder may come in handy because the electric motorised versions can make a hell of a racket.

The more expensive manual grinders tend to be made in Japan and have more expensive component parts which are reflected in the price and the price is also bumped up for these products because it costs more to make something in Japan.

This product is made in China but it is strong and robust and in this case, you definitely benefit from the low manufacturing costs in China as these costs are reflected in a much lower price for this item than you would expect for something of this quality made somewhere like Japan.

Overall Score 9.9/10

Design 9/10

This looks as good as it performs. Finished in a matt stainless steel and measuring in at just 17.5cm tall and 4.8cm wide it weighs just 281 grams so it going to fit easily into any space in your home and it won’t take up much space if you bring it with you on your travels.

It comes with ceramic burrs so it’s not going to wear out any time soon and used correctly should last for many years.

Functionality 10/10

Despite the small and compact size, it holds up to 32g of beans which is pretty impressive and will mean that you can grind enough for 2 x double espresso’s if you are grinding finely for milk-based coffee drinks such as cappuccino or latte or 4 cups of coffee if you prefer to use a more coarse grind for use in a filter coffee machine or cafetière.

Ease of use 10/10

This is suitable for grinding for all types of coffee machine. You adjust how fine the grind will be by easily turning a cog that moves the burrs closer together or further apart. The further apart they are, the coarser the grind will be and the closer they are the finer the ground coffee will be.

The easiest way to set it to how you want is to turn it as far clockwise as it will go in order to get to the finest setting and then turn it clockwise click by click until you get it just right. Once its set you don’t need to touch it again and you can grind away to your heart’s content.

Just pop the beans in the top in the same way as you would with a pepper mill, screw the top on and turn the handle. Dead simple.

Value For Money 10/10

If you are looking for something that will provide you with a consistently high-quality grind but you don’t want to shell out for a top of the range electric grinder and you don’t mind putting in a little bit of legwork then this will fit the bill perfectly.
