SWAN SK13130N Programmable Coffee Maker ,0.75L, Black
  • A simple, no fuss coffee machine with a modest 750ml capacity, helping to eliminate waste

Overall Score 9.2/10

Design 8/10

Considering that this is a very low-cost coffee machine it actually looks ok. Despite it being so cheap Swan have tried to add an element of design to it and it doesn’t just look like a lump of plastic.

Black all over with a matt stainless steel look on the front and also on the control panel towards the bottom it looks fine and due to a very small overall footprint will sit inconspicuously next to your kettle and comes in about the same size.

The glass jug looks and feels strong and sturdy. You could actually argue that the jug itself could cost up to half of what you are paying for this entire filter coffee machine

Surrounding the LCD display are 4 buttons that do everything you need to make a pot of coffee. Simple, no fuss.

The filter and water reservoir are both easily accessed from the top simply by lifting the lid.

It measures in at 20.5cm wide x 17cm deep and x 27cm tall. A very small appliance suitable for any kitchen.

Functionality 10/10

Sometimes you just have to be amazed at what is possible at a certain price. This costs little more than the price of a pizza but is somehow rich in features that will give much more pleasure over time than a vegetarian supreme with stuffed crusts.

There are not many parts to this coffee machine so not much can go wrong but if it does it is covered by the 1 year manufacturers warranty.

Other than the coffee maker itself it comes with the glass jug, a removable water filter and a measuring spoon for your coffee.

The water container holds up to 750ml of water which will show as 5 cups on the markings on the side. However, you will get 2 good sized mugs of coffee out of it and up to about 4 smaller cups so this is most suited for a smaller household and is perfect for 2 people.

Once you have filled it up with water and added the coffee simply press the ON/OFF button and the machine springs into action. It’s pretty quick as well. You can expect to be able to pour a couple of cups within about 7 minutes.

More expensive machines have an anti-drip function but we were most certainly not expecting one at this price. If you are mid-brew but you fancy pouring yourself a cup, you don’t need to turn it off first.

Simply removing the jug and the machine will pause for up to 30 seconds without dripping onto the hot plate below. That’s amazing at this price.

Another excellent feature is the nylon reusable filter. No extra cost needs to be incurred by buying paper filters. Simply empty the used coffee grounds and run the filter underwater and you are good to go again.

Tip: One scoop of coffee per cup required is normally enough but you can add a little more if you like your coffee stronger.

The hotplate will warm up when you turn on and will stay on for 2 hours before automatically shutting down. We would recommend drinking the coffee within 40 minutes though as the flavour will start to become impaired after that.

There is also boil dry protection so if you put an empty jug back on the hotplate it will shut down.

You even get a digital display with the time. Programming to come on in the morning is super simple as well. Just press the PROG button twice and use the arrows to set the time you want it to come on.

For the price, it is astonishingly feature rich.

Ease of use 10/10

Lift up the lid, add water, add coffee, turn it on. Enjoy coffee.

That’ll be 10/10 for easy to use then!

Quality of coffee 8/10

At this price for the machine, it is tempting to go for cheap coffee as well. But if you can afford it spend a few pounds more and get some decent stuff from the local coffee shop and I promise you will taste the difference.

It’s best to buy fresh beans and grind them yourself. You can get a reasonable blade grinder for much less than you think

Value For Money 10/10

This is a very low-cost coffee machine that punches well over its weight.

As long as you are using decent coffee then this will produce a drink that knocks instant coffee straight out of the park – miles better.

If you combine the price with the features and then add that to the fact that no paper filters are required either this is an extremely low-cost machine that is also extremely low cost to maintain.

Superb value for money.
