- A mild or strong cup of coffee from the best automatic coffee machine, Indicator on water tank for 10 large cups (125ml) or 15 small cups (85 ml)
Melitta only do coffee so with nothing else to fall back on if their coffee machines are no good, we would hope that would focus the mind to ensure that you get a really good cup of coffee from the various machines they have available.
Filter coffee machines are more geared towards households that are looking to brew a pot of coffee that will be good for a couple of hours so let’s see if this fits the bill.
Overall Score 9.9/10
Design 10/10
Straight out of the box this is a really classy looking appliance which immediately oozes quality.
You can tell that Melitta has spent a considerable amount of time on making sure this doesn’t just make a good cup of coffee but that it looks good as well
The black and brushed stainless steel body blend seamlessly together to create a very modern looking piece of equipment that has an air of individuality that makes it stand apart from other coffee machines in this category
They have even thought carefully about the water tank which seems to wrap around the back of the machine and comes round both sides so that you can see the amount of water at all times without having to go round to the back
A very well thought through, superior design coffee machine
Functionality 10/10
The water container holds up to 1.2 litres of water but the cup indicators provide a guide as to the number of cups of coffee you can expect relative to how much water you add.
Melitta recognises that cup sizes are different for everyone so they show the number of small cups and number of large cups. To further clarify, a small cup will give you about 85ml of coffee and a large around 125ml
Add approximately 1 large tablespoon of coffee or 8 grams for every small cup you need. A little bit of trial and error and it won’t be long before you have worked out exactly how you like it.
One feature that sounds good but we have decided is a bit of a gimmick is the aroma selector. There is a dial which you can turn that is supposed to make the coffee milder or stronger depending on how you position it. We can’t see that it makes any difference which is quite poor.
If the machine empties the water from the water container and through the coffee and into the jug how exactly does it make it stronger or milder? We can’t tell the difference regardless of where it is positioned. This is one feature that doesn’t seem to do anything.
There is no hotplate with this coffee machine as it is supplied with an insulated flask type jug which actually does a really good job of keeping the coffee hot for up to 2 hours.
Try and drink whatever you have brewed though in the first hour because after that the flavour will start to be affected for the worse.
You will need to buy paper filters separately – size 4 fits well.
It also comes with a timer so that you can come into the kitchen in the morning to a freshly brewed cup of coffee ready to drink.
Ease of Use 10/10
This extremely simple to use. Just make sure you have the correct amount of water and coffee in the machine and press the start button.
Once all the water has passed through the coffee, it will automatically turn off.
It’s very quick as well, producing up to a litre of coffee in about 5 minutes.
Quality of coffee 10/10
Get good coffee! If you have time then get fresh coffee beans and grind them yourself.
The best coffee grinders are HERE
The fresher the beans the better the taste. Try and get the beans from a coffee shop and look for the roasting date as opposed to the use-by date. Anything roasted in the last 4 weeks is fine.
Value For Money 9/10
This might have got a 10/10 if it wasn’t for the Aroma selector which doesn’t appear to do very much.
This is a fantastic looking coffee machine that does everything that it is supposed to and if you want something a little different with the thermal jug instead of a hotplate to keep the coffee hot then this is well worth a look.
