This is the kind of milk frother that will most likely appeal to you if you have already owned a cheaper milk frother in the past and are looking for a high-quality product that produces an end result similar to what you would get in a coffee shop.

This is going to cost you between two and three times the price of some of the best-selling entry-level milk frothers out there so it’s important to understand what you are getting for the extra money.

If you drink milky coffee drinks like cappuccino or latte on a regular basis then getting the correct texture of milk and the correct amount of froth and foam is crucial to making coffee correctly and the overall enjoyment of it.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with buying a cheap milk frother. They do a reasonable job of heating and frothing milk but they are not going to replicate heated milk the way you get it in a coffee shop.

If you want to get as close as possible to a coffee shop experience at home but you don’t have a coffee machine with a steam wand then this is the next best thing.

So what does this do that cheaper milk frothers don’t?

Features

One of the best and most important features that you won’t get with any of the cheaper milk frothers is induction heating.

We don’t want to bore you with science but with induction heating the heat is generated by a current that flows through a coil and generates a magnetic field that heats anything inside the coil.

It’s better than cheaper frothers because it’s more reliable and more accurate. Induction heating will last longer and it will give you a more accurate temperature consistently.

It has a removable stainless-steel jug that is completely detachable from the main body of the frother.

The jug spins round 360 degrees so whether you are left-handed or right-handed you can turn it and hold it any which way. This is also excellent if you want to keep it in a tight space or in a corner as you can position the handle anywhere you like.

The jug is also 100% dishwasher safe so when you are done just pop it straight into the dishwasher with no washing up required.

In our experience though the best way to maintain it is to give it a quick rinse in the sink as soon as you have finished heating or frothing your milk and that will do the job just fine.

That way it’s also ready to use again straight away instead of finding out you want to make another coffee a few hours later only to discover the frother is in the dishwasher that only goes on once a day.

Because the jug is detachable from the main unit and it has a handle in it, rinsing under the tap is very simple and takes seconds compared to most frothers that are not dishwasher safe and have to be held awkwardly under the tap because of the size.

The milk temperature is set using a dial on the front of the machine and depending on the model you choose the number of different temperature levels will vary.

The entry-level frother has 4 different temperatures to choose from. 45, 55, 60 or 65 degrees Celsius.

If you order a Cappuccino or Latte in a coffee shop they will always monitor the temperature of the milk and will never heat it above 65 degrees. Most stop at between 55 and 60 degrees.

It is personal preference as to how hot you like it but milk starts to burn when you go over 70 degrees and 65 is very hot.

Select the temperature you want and press start. It comes with 2 whisks that will either heat your milk or froth it up depending on your drink of choice.

If you prefer a flat white or a latte the milk heating whisk is best as it will aerate the milk and create a nice texture without much froth but if you like lots of froth then the other whisk will give you everything you need for a café quality cappuccino.

The whisks are magnetic and a nice little touch by Severin enables you to stick them onto the back of the frother ensuring they are easily accessible and also makes sure you never lose them.

To get the best quality froth you should use whole milk (or full fat as we like to call it in the UK) because it will produce the thickest creamiest froth.

Semi-skimmed milk will work fine as well but don’t buy this frother if you want to try and froth up skimmed milk.

Skimmed milk has almost zero fat in it and is reduced to pretty much water so there isn’t really anything left to froth. You can certainly heat skimmed milk and add it to your coffee but its not going to produce much flavour in the way that semi-skimmed or full fat milk will.

The quality of the Severin also means that you can heat and froth non-dairy milk to a high standard.

The Vegans out there will know that it is hard to heat or froth non-dairy milk because it tends to split and tends to curdle and form clumps.

Maybe it’s to do with the even distribution of the heating process because of the induction heating as this frother does a good job with almond or soy milk with no splitting of the milk.

Unusually for a milk frother, you can choose from a number of different models at different prices.

The top of the range model for example comes with 13 different settings so that you can tweak the temperature and froth level to exactly how you want it.

You can get one with a hot chocolate function that allows you to add whole pieces of chocolate straight to the jug and it will melt it down and heat it up to your desired temperature for the perfect hot chocolate.

Verdict

A very high-quality milk frother that is a genuine example of “you get what you pay for”.

Precision temperature control with induction heating, very easy to use with a detachable milk jug that is dishwasher safe and it produces thick creamy froth.

This is far from the cheapest milk frother out there but the quality, specification and performance still makes it really good value for money for what you get.
