If you are into coffee and you want to start to move your coffee making skills towards perfection then a set of coffee scales are an essential part of the kit you need to fine-tune things.

The Accuweight Digital pocket scales are incredible value for money and are perfect for checking both the weight of your coffee before brewing and the weight of the coffee when it is delivered into your cup.

It is possible to spend hundreds of pounds on a set of scales to weigh your coffee and having spent a considerable amount of time reviewing some of these insanely expensive scales we can confirm that they are a complete waste of time and money.

Some of them have a timer so that you can check the speed your coffee is being extracted but for the extra money you need to pay just use the timer on your phone, that’s what I do.

You can also get scales that you can connect up to an app to monitor all sorts of crazy things like the speed you are pouring water over your coffee. They are a waste of time and the apps don’t work properly anyway.

We don’t recommend them because we only suggest products that represent good value for money and the bottom line is if you want to weigh your coffee before it goes into your machine and you want to weigh the amount of coffee that is being extracted into your cup then you simply do not need to spend any more than the price of these Accuweight digital scales.

There are quite a few coffee scales at this price level but the thing that attracted us to these the most is their versatility as part of the design.

Features and benefits

Accuweight describes these as “pocket” scales and for good reason. You can fit them easily into your pocket but the best part is that they become much bigger by simply converting the lid into a weighing tray. With the lid on they are just 10cm long and 7cm wide.

They are simple yet super effective. The lid clips onto the body of the scales and when you take it off, you just turn it horizontal and it sits securely on top ready to weigh your coffee.

You can weigh up to 1000g in increments of 0.1 gram so it’s got you covered whether you want to weigh enough coffee for a single espresso or a whole pot of filter coffee.

Incredibly at this price it also comes with 2 x AAA batteries as well so you have everything you need to get going straight out of the box.

The numbers are very easy to read in a large black font on a blue background and are activated by one press of the ON/OFF button.

You don’t even need to remember to turn it off as it will automatically go off after 90 seconds of inactivity.

It’s important to choose scales with a “Tare” function. A strange word that most people will not be familiar with, it basically means that it will zero the weight when something is on the scales so that you can easily see the weight of the contents only rather than the container as well.

That’s exactly what you need when you are weighing coffee because you only want to know how much coffee you have and not the combined weight of the coffee and the portafilter.

For espresso, just pop the lid longways onto the scales to create a tray and put the portafilter on top of the tray. Press the “Tare” button and that will reset the scales to zero.

You can then grind your coffee straight into the portafilter and check the weight as you go.

Making sure you have the right amount of coffee is absolutely critical to getting the best tasting coffee possible.

If you just go in blind and add some coffee to an espresso machine and press the button to deliver the coffee then you will almost certainly get a bitter or bland coffee.

In an ideal world, you want about 18-20 grams of coffee into the portafilter and about 40-60 grams off coffee out into your cup and it should be delivered in about 25 seconds.

One of the reasons I like these scales so much is that I can pop them on top of the drip tray underneath the coffee outlet and then place my cup on top.

As soon as I press the start button on my coffee machine I start the stopwatch on my phone to check how quickly 50ml of coffee is delivered into my cup.

Too slow and I adjust the grinder to make the coffee a little coarser and too quickly I make the grind size a little finer until I hit that sweet spot of about 50ml in 25 seconds.

If this is not something you are familiar with then you will be amazed at the difference going through this process makes to the end result.

You end up with a coffee that is far better than anything you pay £3 or more for in a coffee shop.

Verdict

Super compact digital scales that do everything you need to weight your coffee accurately.

Don’t waste your money on anything more expensive, you really don’t need to spend more.

Small, lightweight and portable, you can bring them anywhere and they can, of course, be used to weigh anything, not just coffee.

A budget price point set of scales that are everything you need to help you produce a great-tasting cup of coffee.

Great for personal use or as a gift for any coffee enthusiast.
